Living with dry AMD

Don't just watch it happen.

Dry AMD is the leading cause of central vision loss in later life. Reading, faces, fine detail — all affected, while side vision stays sharp. For years, the only advice was to wait. Now there's more you can do.

Drusen build-up

Tiny deposits form under the retina as cells lose the energy to clear waste away.

Central blur

Reading, faces and fine detail get harder — even while your side vision stays clear.

"Wait and see"

The old advice. Monitor, and do nothing, until things get worse.

How AMD can change what you see: the Amsler grid

Opticians use a simple grid like this to check for early signs of AMD. It's worth learning what to look for at home, too.

Normal vision
Straight, even lines in every direction
Possible signs of AMD
Wavy, broken or blurred lines near the centre

This is an illustrative simulation to help you recognise symptoms, not a diagnostic tool or a treatment result. If lines look wavy, patchy or missing when you look at a real grid or a doorframe, book a macular assessment.

The science

The power of light, three ways

Three precise wavelengths, one goal: feeding energy back into the cells behind your sight.²

590nm 660nm 850nm
590 nm

Vascular support

Increases nitric oxide synthesis and vasodilation, which can improve local oxygenation and nutrient delivery to the retina.²

660 nm

Cellular metabolism

Promotes oxygen binding, stimulates ATP metabolic activity, and helps inhibit inflammation and cell death.³

850 nm

Energy production

Drives electron transfer, stimulating ATP metabolic activity and helping inhibit inflammation and cell death.³

Why it matters

The retina is one of the most mitochondria-rich tissues in the body, and mitochondrial dysfunction is a known driver of vision loss in dry AMD.

The target

Cytochrome c oxidase, a key enzyme in the mitochondrial energy chain, absorbs these specific wavelengths of light.

The effect

Activating this enzyme supports electron transport and ATP production — the cell's primary source of energy.

The evidence

Proven. Not just promised.

What treatment is designed to target: drusen deposits

Published research on Valeda has reported reduced drusen volume in some treated patients.&sup7; This is an original illustrative diagram of that concept — not an actual scan, and not a guaranteed outcome.

What a positive response may look like

This diagram is a simplified, original illustration created to explain the concept behind Valeda treatment — it is not a real OCT scan, not a photograph, and not a specific patient's result. Individual scans and outcomes vary, and only your optometrist can assess your own retina.&sup7;

Am I suitable?

Could Valeda be right for you?

Suitability is only confirmed after a clinical retinal assessment with Sukhi — this is a general guide, not a diagnosis.

Often suitable

  • ✓You have a diagnosis of early or intermediate dry AMD, with drusen present
  • ✓You are aged 50 or over
  • ✓You have not been diagnosed with wet (neovascular) AMD
  • ✓You want an active option beyond "watch and wait" monitoring

Usually not suitable

  • ×You have wet (neovascular) AMD or central-involving geographic atrophy
  • ×You have a known photosensitivity to yellow, red or near-infrared light
  • ×You have a history of light-triggered conditions such as epilepsy or migraine
  • ×You are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have significant cataracts affecting your vision

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is Valeda and how does it work?
Valeda is a photobiomodulation device that applies three specific wavelengths of light (590nm, 660nm and 850nm) to the retina. These wavelengths are absorbed by mitochondria in retinal cells, supporting the energy production that can decline in dry AMD. It is non-invasive, requires no dilation, injections or anaesthesia, and each session takes only a few minutes.
Does Valeda cure dry AMD?
No. Valeda is not a cure. Clinical trial data shows it can help improve or maintain vision in many patients with early or intermediate dry AMD over the treatment period, but the evidence base is still developing and results vary between individuals. Your suitability is assessed at a retinal consultation.
How many sessions does Valeda involve, and how long do they take?
A course is nine short sessions, usually delivered over three to five weeks. The published treatment protocol involves six courses (54 sessions) spread across two years. Each session takes only a few minutes per eye, with no dilation and no downtime.
Is Valeda safe?
Valeda is FDA-authorised, and no treatment-related phototoxicity was reported across three LIGHTSITE clinical trials. As with any treatment, suitability depends on your individual eye health, which is why every patient is assessed first.
How much does Valeda cost?
Valeda is offered privately as a transparent package price covering your consultation and treatment course. We'll confirm the exact price and any available options at your assessment.
Is Valeda available on the NHS?
No. Valeda is privately provided and not currently funded by the NHS.
